During the period of time when all the Nazis were being put in concentration camps, a lot of people grew up faster when they started realizing just what they were facing: life or death. In the story, Hannah, otherwise known as Chaya, grew up and understood a lot that was going on and would be happening at the concentration camps that were around. Hannah knew a lot of what would happen and what was going on before most of everyone else had a clue; somehow she had been through it all before. Hannah tried to warn and tell the others but no one would believe her or listen, they all just thought she was trying to scare them. Hannah’s loss of innocence was when she remembered all of her memories and told people. They all just thought Hannah was being funny or that she was crazy when she was being serious and knew what would happen to them. Every time she would bring something about what would happen up, it just made her look crazy. Hannah didn’t know by already knowing and telling everyone that it could scare them or make them mad if they didn’t want to hear it. Hannah almost grows up with the fact she knows what is happening when she is only a teenage girl. With her already knowing everything about the Holocaust she doesn’t seem like a child anymore, even her “aunt” Gitle started talking to her like she was a woman and not just a kid. Hannah’s memories showed the loss of her innocence through the Devil’s Arithmetic.
