This book, The Devil’s Arithmetic, is based in Poland. Poland is a small country located by Germany. During World War II, Poland allied with France and Great Britain. Also in 1939, Poland was invaded by Germany. People that lived in Poland were affected greatly by the war. The economy became even worse every day. A large majority of Polish citizens were out of jobs and could not afford very much. During the Holocaust, the things that were occurring affected most Polish. About three-fourths of the Jews lived in Poland. Mostly all of them were killed, some escaped. About 3,000,000 Jews died that were from Poland. The largest concentration camp in the world was located in Poland, it was called Auschwitz. This camp was operational for 5 years, and created by the Soviet Union. During the five years, it killed nearly 1.1 million people. During World War II, about 240,000 Polish soldiers died. About the same amount of people died from starvation or other destruction during that time. Also, during World War II the largest underground Resistance army was the Polish Home Army.
